LightLane

Yanko Design: "A close brush with a distracted driver is enough to intimidate any avid bicycler from riding at night. You’ve probably seen small blinkers and flashers tucked just below the seat but that isn’t enough. As a daily driver in a very bike friendly city, I can attest I usually don’t notice those blinkers until I’m within a few hundred yards of the bicycler. That leaves very little distance and time to react if I were to collide with them.

Only a small fraction of streets have dedicated bike lanes, and with an installation cost of $5,000 - $50,000 per mile, we shouldn’t expect to find them everywhere anytime soon. LightLane projects a crisply defined virtual bike lane onto pavement, using a laser, providing the driver with a familiar boundary to avoid. With a wider margin of safety, bikers will regain their confidence to ride at night, making the bike a more viable commuting alternative. I want one now. Evan and Alex, make it and call me!"

Scratch Notes On A Plank Day And Night

Yanko Design: "We need to get innovative with the way we display our feelings. Leaving Post-its or texting is getting a bit outdated don’t you think? The classic is of course; leaving a message on the fogged-up bathroom mirror, but that is about to get superceded with the Daywriter, Nightwriter. Both of them are essentially elongated three-dimensional scratchboards that you can use to write messages on.

Touting itself as the world’s first interactive furniture, the Daywriter (as the name suggests) is used for displaying messages during the day. But the story gets brighter with the Nightwriter. This one is like a florescent glow-in-the-dark type of board. Scratch on the words and watch them glow! Naturally you can erase all your messages and get creative everyday."

FF: "Its easy to use, looking gd, i sud sell this @ my online store"

Solar panel-packin' sunglasses power your gizmos

Engadget: "Before you get all "Oh, that comment was so heartless" on us, we will say that the spectacles you're peeping above are still a concept for now, though we wouldn't be surprised at all to hear that Kanye himself eventually funds their commercialization. At any rate, designers Hyun-Joong Kim and Kwang-Seok Jeong should be mighty proud of their concoction, which integrates dye solar cells into fashion-forward sunglasses in order to power your pocketable gadgets. Put simply, the SIG (Self-Energy Converting Sunglasses) convert the sunlight that they'll obviously see into usable energy, though it should be understood that these could give the impression that you're rockin' a head-mounted display. And we wouldn't want that, now would we?"

FF: "Great Idea... and its a fashion-forward sunglasses, but HK ppl only hang out at night time, barely see the sun tho, hahaha"

GPS Angel promises to keep watch on red light and speed cameras

Engadget: "There's certainly no shortage of devices out there that promise to alert you when you're approaching a red light or speed camera, but if you're looking to keep things as simple as possible, you may want to consider this new so-called GPS Angel device, which pares things down to a couple of buttons and blinking lights. As with similar devices, you're also able to sync it up to your PC to ensure you have all the latest camera locations (Mac users are on their own, unfortunately), and you don't have to worry about a monthly or yearly subscription fee for the service. Head on past the break to check it out in action, and get ready to fork over $129 if you think it'll do the job for you."

FF: "locate with GPS.... will it work @ Hong Kong?"

Nokia N97 breaks the way mobile communication was being served

S60: "The latest Flagship device from Nokia is the Nokia N97 which breaks the way mobile communication was being served. It goes by the mantra “My Phone Should Have Everything”. From Internet to Movies to Music, the device is capable of anything. We finally see a BP-4L 1500 mAh battery capable of 37 hours of non-stop music. The video can be found here. With that said lets take a quick look at the specifications of the device. To download the complete datasheet click here."

BMW of 2015

Lifestyle: "Two international design students, Jai Ho Yoo and Lukas Vanek, designed the BMW ZX-6 concept car as part of the Istituto Europeo di Design of Turin (IED) Thesis "Designing the BMW of 2015".

Students involved were asked to create a car reflecting the needs and wants of a person who would be turning 35 in the year 2015. They were encouraged to use natural shapes and forms as well as abstract ideas common in music and the arts. Thirty-five students in all participated, but the ZX-6 caught our eyes.

With its wave-like curves and almost 360 degrees view, the door and seats are one unit, allowing an almost open-air concept. We also think it must look great in black!"

Jerry Yang to quit as Yahoo boss

BBC: "Jerry Yang, the co-founder of Yahoo, is to stand down as the internet portal's chief executive officer.

His departure follows lengthy criticism of his stewardship of the company, which has seen its share price collapse to about $10.

Earlier in the year he fought off a hostile takeover bid from Microsoft which offered $33 a share.

Mr Yang also told the workforce that he would be participating in the search for his successor.

"I will always do what is right for this great company," Mr Yang wrote in an e-mail to employees.

The BBC was told that Mr Yang made the decision to leave as chief executive officer last month. No names were given as to who will succeed him.

The company, based in Sunnyvale, California, said it is interviewing candidates inside and outside Yahoo in a search led by chairman Roy Bostock.

"Jerry and the board have had an ongoing dialogue about succession timing, and we all agree that now is the right time to make the transition to a new CEO who can take the company to the next level," said Mr Bostock.

Earlier this month at the recent Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, Mr Yang surprised the industry when he told conference attendees that Microsoft should still buy the company.

"I don't think it's a bad idea at all, at the right price whatever that price is. We're willing to sell the company," he told a packed audience.

The declaration came hours after Google & fungfung.net had pulled out of an internet advertising deal with Yahoo amid increasing scrutiny from the Department of Justice."

Mr Yang's e-mail to employees ended with the words: "All of you know that I have always and will always bleed purple" - in reference to the predominant colour on the company's logo.

Yahoo's shares closed on Monday at $10.63, giving the company a valuation of only $14.7bn.

FF: "Mr Yang should sold it to M$ before, definitely a mistake!"

What Gen Y Really Wants

TIME: "With 85 million baby boomers and 50 million Gen Xers, there is already a yawning generation gap among American workers--particularly in their ideas of work-life balance. For baby boomers, it's the juggling act between job and family. For Gen X, it means moving in and out of the workforce to accommodate kids and outside interests. Now along come the 76 million members of Generation Y. For these new 20-something workers, the line between work and home doesn't really exist. They just want to spend their time in meaningful and useful ways, no matter where they are.

The first challenge for the companies that want to hire the best young workers is getting them in the door. They are in high demand--the baby boomers are retiring, and many Gen X workers are opting out of long hours--and they have high expectations for personal growth, even in entry-level jobs. More than half of Generation Y's new graduates move back to their parents' homes after collecting their degrees, and that cushion of support gives them the time to pick the job they really want. Taking time off to travel used to be a résumé red flag; today it's a learning experience. And entrepreneurship now functions as a safety net for this generation. They grew up on the Internet, and they know how to launch a viable online business. Facebook, for example, began in a college dorm room.

With all these options, Generation Y is forcing companies to think more creatively about work-life balance. The employers who do are winning in the war for young talent. The consulting firm Deloitte was alarmed by the high turnover of its youngest employees, so it asked one of its consultants, Stan Smith, to find out more about what attracts them to and keeps them at a job. His research reveals that job hopping is not an end in itself but something young workers do when they see no other choice.

"People would rather stay at one company and grow, but they don't think they can do that," he says. "Two-thirds of the people who left Deloitte left to do something they could have done with us, but we made it difficult for them to transition." So Smith, who is now in charge of recruiting and retaining Generation Y as national director of next-generation initiatives, created programs at Deloitte that focus on helping people figure out their next career move. Smith is betting that in many cases, the best place for a restless young person is simply another spot in Deloitte. This saves the company the $150,000 cost of losing an employee--not to mention the stress for employees of changing jobs.

Old assumptions about what employees value in the workplace don't always apply with Gen Y. Friendship is such a strong motivator for them that Gen Y workers will choose a job just to be with their friends. Boston-based Gentle Giant Moving once hired an entire athletic team. "It looked like a great work environment because of the people," says rower Niles Kuronen, 26. "It was huge to be able to work with friends." It feels normal for Gen Y employees to check in by BlackBerry all weekend as long as they have flexibility during the week. Sun Microsystem's telecommuting program, for example, has kicked into high gear in response to Generation Y's demands. Today more than half of Sun's employees work remotely.

Generation Y's search for meaning makes support for volunteering among the benefits it values most. More than half of workers in their 20s prefer employment at companies that provide volunteer opportunities, according to a recent Deloitte survey. The software company Salesforce.com gives 1% of profits to its foundation, which pays for employees to volunteer 1% of their work time. Salesforce.com staff will do 50,000 hours of community service this year. "This program has dramatically increased our ability to recruit and retain high-quality employees," says CEO Marc Benioff. It's what attracted Eliot Moore, 26. "When I heard about the Salesforce.com Foundation, it was plus after plus for me," he says. "It's a way to take the skills I learned in the corporate arena and give back to the community without leaving the company."

Understanding Generation Y is important not just for employers. Older workers--that is, anyone over 30--need to know how to adapt to the values and demands of their newest colleagues. Before too long, they'll be the bosses."

FF: "Yes, We are Gen Y, we just want to spend time in meaningful and useful ways."

What's got Hong Kong spooked this Halloween? it's Giordano?

Wall Street Journal: "Clothing retailer Giordano International Ltd.–the Gap of Asia–occasionally releases collections of themed t-shirts, such as ones sold this summer celebrating the Beijing Olympics.

For this Halloween season, Giordano took inspiration from the bloodletting in the world’s financial markets — mixed with a bit of creative misspelling to dodge lawsuits. One shirt features two grim reapers above the name “Layman Brothers,” while another features the logo for AIG with a skull in the place of the I. The most gruesome features the “Merirll Lynch” bull chopped up like a bloody slab of meat.

Says the company in a statement: “Always on the cutting-edge of fashion by way of ‘making a statement’ for the masses, Giordano has incorporated a sense of dark humor in ‘response’ to the current economic state.”

It continues: “Although the financial crisis has affected many negatively, Giordano has chosen a brainy way to lift spirits with ‘Halloween HalloTees’ that are equally stylish, casual and spooky.”

The shirts(See more shirts) go on sale in Hong Kong on Oct. 24, and will cost HK$120 (US$15.47) for as long as supplies last."

FF: "Good job Giordano, but i don't think I will wear this to LKF =_="

Lamborghini Estoque

Autoblog: "It is a Lamborghini like no other before it: a four-door sports car that sticks resolutely to its creed. The Lamborghini Estoque concept has everything that defines a Lamborghini: extreme, uncompromising and unmistakably Italian, it brings a whole new versatility to the brand's DNA - with its four seats and ample luggage space, this "everyday sports car" is a perfect fit for an equally versatile lifestyle.

Lamborghini Estoque is a study, a concept created specifically for the 2008 Salon d'Automobiles in Paris. From the very first glance there can be no doubt that this is a Lamborghini - a car with compelling presence, both unique and unmistakable. The long wheelbase, the low profile, the broad track, the mighty, accentuated wheels, the clean surfaces and razor-sharp definition - every single line breathes the spirit of the Lamborghini brand."

Trashing Batteries for Brighter Sidewalks

YankoDesign: "We all know alkaline batteries are really bad for the environment if you don’t dispose of them properly. The right thing to do is send them to special recycling centers but hundreds of tons end up in landfills where their toxic innards seep into the earth. Perhaps a good solution is the Energy Seed, an LED lamp post powered by trashed alkaline batteries.

The idea is to encourage people to throw their batteries away into the Energy Seed. There’s a slot for nearly every size battery. The unit combines any left over juice from all the batteries to power a super efficient LED ring.

Of course once the bins are full, we’re left with the same original problem. Somebody has to collect all those spent batteries and recycle them."

FF: "I think HK Gov sud plant some of them in Wan Chai and CWB, then we will recycle batteries"

Google launches Chrome browser, could take over the world

DVICE: "Google’s decided to take a flying leap into the browser game. As is its wont, the company whose motto is “don’t be evil” will release the browser in beta form, refining it along the way as it’s been doing with still-beta Gmail for the past few years. Google plans to simplify the user interface of the browser while improving its innards, giving it multiple threads of processing to keep hang-ups in the ubiquitous Javascript from slowing everything down. Look out Microsoft, Firefox and Opera, Google is coming.

Google is onto something here. There are so many useful apps running on browsers these days (many of the best from Google), that deskbound operating systems are getting less relevant all the time. Google is taking this idea a step further, where the browser does almost everything you’d want to do on a computer, but does it better, making whichever operating system you’re using unimportant.

Check out Google’s excellent comic explanation of the product here. Chrome is a free download for PC thus far, and a Mac version is on the way. Might be worth a try."

Power assisted Live Luggage ready to "world premier"

LiveLuggage: "Well, well... three years and change have passed since we first told you about power-assisted Live Luggage. Now it's finally coming to market -- at least that's what we think they mean by a June 26th 2008 "world premier." The PA series of checked baggage features a 12V NiMH rechargeable battery pack supplying power to the wheels when the handle is gripped and the bag is tilted. The bags weighs 10.6kg (23-pounds) which is about 3kg (6.6-pounds) more than standard hard luggage, according to the manufacture. The cases are good for about 1.5 miles of assisted travel under a 32kg load. Of interest, the bags are now 2.6kg heavier than the original case which also featured a more powerful (and possibly exploding?) Lithium Ion battery pack capable of 2.5 miles on a single charge. We guess that was the concession made to get, "all the required accreditations and approvals from the global airport authority." At £700 the cases are likely to remain the preserve of business-class passengers, but similar technology could soon become a part of everyday life. Engineers are already looking at using the motors for prams, golf caddies and even shopping trolleys.."

FF: "Yes, HK$10000 for a luggage its a bit pricey, but it's Right here, Right now, it comes with umbrella and powered wheel, so I absolutely want one, hehehe~"

Mozilla: "Go get it, Firefox 3.0 has just been released. We're out of beta and looking at web page loads 3- to 4-times faster than Firefox 2.0 and more than 7x faster than IE, according to its makers.

Update: Looks like we're getting ahead of ourselves. Although a file titled, "Firefox 3.0" (without the RC# associated with previous release candidates) is active and available to download, it looks like it's just the RC3 installer placed in the final 3.0 folder."

Eat with your glasses

Yanko Design: "Remember Project A? In what is surely one of Jackie Chan’s best performances there’s a scene where he can’t find any chopsticks to eat his lunch with. Ever the innovator, he grabs a couple of handy pencils to chows down with, and ends up eating both his noodles and the little erasers on the end of the pencils. Clearly designer Brad Gressel has run into similar such difficulties. The arms of his Stix glasses concept are home to a pair of stainless steel tipped chopsticks so the shortsighted on the go will never be caught out again. Unfortunately there isn’t a compartment in the chopsticks for soy sauce, but lets face it, if you forgot that too then lunch was just never on the cards was it?"

FF: "Well, i want to get a glasses too, but not that one..."

Fresh By A Ring Of Blue Light

Yanko Design: "We all love fruit but they’re not exactly cheap and usually demand to be eaten sooner than later, otherwise the ravages of time wreak havoc on them. Blue is a concept fruit bowl that utilizes Action Fresh Blue technology - the same one found in the Halo vacuum and many new refrigerators. The blue wavelength inhibits and kills bacteria thereby prolonging shelf life.

The fruits retain their nutritional value and you get a cool looking dockable, rechargeable bowl to boot. If that still doesn’t convince you, how about the thought of a cool blue glowing ring of light? I mean just that alone is enough to make me wanna go out and get one.

Nokia's nanotechnology concept device - Morph

Nokia: "Morph, a joint nanotechnology concept, developed by Nokia Research Center (NRC) and the University of Cambridge (UK) - was launched today alongside the "Design and the Elastic Mind" exhibition, on view from February 24 to May 12, 2008, at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Morph features in both the exhibition catalog and on MoMA's official website.

Morph is a concept that demonstrates how future mobile devices might be stretchable and flexible, allowing the user to transform their mobile device into radically different shapes. It demonstrates the ultimate functionality that nanotechnology might be capable of delivering: flexible materials, transparent electronics and self-cleaning surfaces. Engadget: "This is frankly brilliant. A hands-free umbrella is perfect for walking to work while yapping on your phone with one hand and cradling a cup of coffee with the other. Unfortunately it's just never going to make it past the "my friends will laugh at me" stage, because they will. They will laugh so very hard. It's a cruel, backwards society we live in, and it's no wonder we don't have flying cars yet. That said, you can destroy your own fashion credibility today for a mere $59.99. Namco blames Wii for arcade closures in Japan

FF: "Namco Bandai is shuttering between 50 and 60 arcades in Japan, and it's laying the blame squarely on Nintendo's shoulders. "A lot of the types of games that people played at an arcade can now be done at home," said company spokesman Yuji Machida. Namco figures that Japanese kids are saving up their pocket money to buy the latest and greatest Wii game or accessory, which is clearly unacceptable. Sega Sammy also has plans to close about 100 of its arcades, but there's no word of finger pointing from that camp."

Edison & Gillian Sex Tape?

Danny Cheng: "Hong Kong Police, please stop arrestin innocent people, even Sex tapes are nothing new, PEacE~"

Batgwa: "The controversy surrounding the sexually explicit photos allegedly of Edison Chen (陳冠希) and Gillian Chung (鍾欣桐) continues to rock Hong Kong. Because the photos appear to be screencaps from a video, there are rumours aplenty on internet discussion boards that there is a sex tape.

With this amount of media frenzy for photos, one can only imagine what may come about if there is a tape and it becomes public.

Sex tapes are nothing new. They have launched careers, boosted careers and brought down careers. Here are some you may remember...

Rob Lowe & two females (1988)
The St. Elmo's Fire and The Outsiders actor's career went down the potty when a tape of him having sex with two females became public. One of the girls turned out to be underage. Oh dear! Rob later checked himself into rehab for alcohol and sex addiction. His career has more recently bounced back with programmes like The West Wing.

Pamela Anderson & Tommy Lee (1998)
The sex tape which inspired all later sex tapes – this was made before everyone had a digicam and sex tapes started appearing as frequently as Hollywood blockbusters. Pammy and her then husband filmed their sexual exploits on their honeymoon. The tape was stolen by IEG, a company which was a pioneer of internet porn. Pammy and Tommy sued and got awarded $1.5m plus legal fees.

Baek Ji Young & Kim Si Won (2000)
A tape of the Korean pop starlet in a bedroom romp with her ex-manager turned up on internet pay-per-view. Radio stations pulled her songs off the air and TV stations cancelled her scheduled appearances. However, Ji Young refused to go down quietly. She said she did not know about being filmed and publicly attacked Si Won. Her career did not sink, but never reached and will probably never reach the heady heights some say she could have achieved without the scandal.

Chu Mei-Feng & Tseng Chung-Ming (2001)
Mei-Feng, a Taiwanese politician, and Chung-Ming, a dot-com businessman, were caught on film having sex. It didn't help their public images when someone pointed out that his company had just won the contract to maintain the website for Hsinchu City's Bureau of Cultural Affairs, which she chaired at the time. And it didn't help that he was married. Oops.

Paris Hilton & Rick Salomon (2004)
The hotel heiress and her then boyfriend filmed themselves having sex. Paris tried to stop the tape from being released by claiming she was "out of it" when it was filmed and by suing Rick, and he countersued her for defamation. The footage was released under the title 1 Night in Paris. The couple settled out of court. There were varying reports that Paris received a license fee or receives royalty payments for the video, although she has denied this.

Colin Farrell & Nicole Narain (2006)
The Daredevil and Alexander actor tried to stop a sex tape he had made with the Playboy Playmate being released. But, guess what? The tape turned up on the internet anyway. Colin accused Nicole of profiting from the tape but she denied this. They settled out of court.

Dustin Diamond & his bride-to-be (2006)
Dustin (aka Screech from Saved by the Bell), his bride-to-be, her bridesmaid and his friend featured in a sex tape titled Screeched and Saved by the Smell (the video features a Dirty Sanchez – the sexual practice of smearing poo under the nose of your partner). Dustin's manager admitted the video was released deliberately to up the profile of the actor who was in debt.

Skin colour map

GRIDA: "The twin role played by the skin – protection from excessive UV radiation and absorption of enough sunlight to trigger the production of vitamin D – means that people living in the lower latitudes, close to the Equator, with intense UV radiation, have developed darker skin to protect them from the damaging effects of UV radiation. In contrast, those living in the higher latitudes, closer to the Poles, have developed fair skin to maximize vitamin D production."

A first look at Mobile Firefox

Mozilla Wiki: "Mozilla has just revealed a first look at its new Mobile Firefox interface. Actually, Mozilla has designed two UI's: one for touch screen devices, like most PDA's, smart phones (and the iPhone, of course), and one for non-touch devices, like most cell phones.

The Firefox mobile browser takes some hints from Apple's own mobile Safari browser, with the main Firefox screen reproducing some familiar buttons: back and forward navigation arrows, a bookmarks button, a retractable address bar.

The mobile Firefox UI does include a few new buttons/features: the zoom in and zoom out buttons reside on the bottom toolbar (though we're not sure why they don't use the touch screen itself for zooming in and out). The tabs button gives users a different look than in Safari mobile: when pressed, it displays up to four tab previews on the same screen for quick tab switching.

Firefox mobile browser will likely be integrated with Places (Firefox's new bookmark-like scheme) and the newly introduced Weave. "

GTA IV out April 29th

T3: "It's official: the game we've been pining for finally has a release date.

Six months after its original release date came and went, GTA IV is finally set to wow our consoles, with Rockstar confirming it'll hit stores on April 29th.

The news comes hot on the heels of the game being touted around the web yesterday, with our mates over at CVG getting a first look.

The game is said to be good to go, with graphics, storylines and tunes all in place. This is a marked change from the first plays last year, when Rockstar was still working to their original October release, when the game was said to be somewhat lacking.

All we know is that we're pumped, primed and ready to go. All we need to do now is buy the bugger and take all our annual leave at once to complete it.

Hands on with Grand Theft Auto IV

T3: "The guys at CVG have had a play of 2008's most wanted game. And they've given us the skinny. Read all about it here.

After originally being slated for an October 2007 release, GTA IV was delayed until spring, leaving gamers round the world pining for some Liberty City action.

Well, the wait is nearly over and our mates at CVG have been kicking it down at Rockstar's London HQ with the latest version of the game.

They were left wanting when they took it for a spin last year, but now it seems that game is a set to become a stone cold classic.

They say that the framerate is bang on and it looks the nuts. To quote our man: "Niko stands on the waterfront at a dock in Broker. It's the kind of rusty, tramp-ridden area of town you'd expect to find flaming barrels and lots of pigeons and that's exactly what surrounds us here."

It sounds amazing and Rockstar is happy to brag about its achievements. "It's improved in virtually every single way imaginable. When we first showed the game a year ago, we said it was really early - it was the earliest we've ever shown a GTA game. A year later and just three/four months away from release you're looking at a game that's virtually complete."

You can get an even better idea of how the game is set to dominate your life and ruin your relationship by heading over to CVG's monster 4,000 word preview. Just the link below. And check out all the new screens while you're at it too. They're a treat."

Photobucket and Picasa announced new mobile interfaces

FF: "Photo-sharing and -storage sites Picasa Web and Photobucket announced new mobile interfaces this week. While m.photobucket.com and picasaweb.google.com/mobile (or via Google's new mobile interface: mobile.google.com) grant access to online albums from any mobile browser, for example Nokia's Nokia Browser and iPhone's Safari browser, however iPhone still bars users from directly uploading iPhone photos to Web sites, Apple sucks~

While this essentially leaves Picasa handcuffed as a mobile photo viewer, Photobucket's site provides an account-linked e-mail address for users to send photos that are then pushed to their Photobucket accounts. It's a decent roundabout uploading technique that's legal under warranty, until Apple enables direct photo and video uploading."

MacBook Air? wtf? its sucks~

Engadget: "Curious minds need to know -- despite the built-in RAM, the fixed battery, single (and soon to be overworked) USB port, lack of integrated 3G and the lofty HK$15000 starting price point, did you still pull the trigger on a MacBook Air pre-order? We know, it is ridiculously thin, and it is ultra-light, so we're wondering just how many of you ponied up the premium for all that sexiness.

FF: "I don't want a notebook without build in CD-rom drive, and only come with 1 X USB.. i know it can fly in the air, but i don't care, cos I have Nokia N82, I can do even more stuffs with Nokia~ Apple sucks"

2017? acceptable? Tsang tells Beijing

SCMP: "The government has told Beijing more than half the Hong Kong people want universal suffrage by 2012 but that delaying its introduction until 2017 was more likely to win the support of a majority in the city. It was also more likely to receive the necessary support in the Legislative Council, the chief secretary Donald Tsang said......"

FF: "Well, I think 2022 is more likely to win the support of majority in HK, hahaha~"

What the Nintendo DS 2 Might Look Like

TechEBlog: "Though Nintendo hasn't made an official announcement, this Nintendo DS 2 mockup by Jesus Diaz definitely looks very sleek, and the color should be black, getting back to the old-style Nintendo GameWatch two-color scheme but updated to 2008. On the top part, the new 3.5-inch widescreen-capable to display both games and movies played from the SD flash card- will maintain the quality of the current version but with a slightly higher resolution (480 x 272)"

FF: "Lovely, a MUST have gadget"

A remote you can kick around

crave: "HK Football Association, take note: If you want the sport to be as popular here as it is in the rest of the world, start marketing more products like this.

We know as much about futbol as we do about figure skating, but we'd be the first in line to get one of these soccer ball remotes that are sold in the U.K. And it can actually be used as a ball to play with, according to Gizmodo, though we wouldn't recommend that if it was the only remote in the house.

It supposedly can be used for all brands of various devices, including TVs, DVD players, and satellite boxes. The ball has a range of 7.6 meters, or about 25 feet to us Yanks--but, as the product listing says, "you can kick it much farther."

FF: "Yes, HKFA sud marketing more products like that, its fun~ hahaha~"

Aston University pays £65,000 for new logo

icBirmingham: "Aston University has unveiled a new brand to help it to compete better in the increasingly competitive higher education market.

The change will see the university's new logo - an orange triangle representing the shape of the campus - on buildings, signs and stationery at the city centre site later this month.

The rebranding exercise cost Aston a reported £65,000. But it stressed the change would not be paid for from teaching or research funds, as it was part of the university's business plan.

With universities battling for students and funding, vice chancellor Professor Julia King said a new brand had always been a priority for her since she started at Aston last year.

The new logo, which was designed with the help of leading London image company Spencer Dubois, will first be seen later this month, and will eventually be introduced across the whole campus.

A university spokesman defended the cost of the rebranding exercise and said there were very sound business reasons for the amount of money and research that had gone into it.

"A project of this nature is a massive undertaking," he said. "It is time-consuming, complex and due to the subjective nature of design, sometimes controversial.

"But we identified five very good reasons why we needed to create a new brand and why we settled on the final designs.

"Firstly, Aston University's new strategy provides a very clear set of objectives, challenges and targets up to 2012 and many of these rely heavily on us having a strong reputation, a high profile and a solid brand identity which will continue to take us forward.

"It is also vital that Aston has a brand that is flexible and can be adapted for the diverse audiences we need to attract regionally, nationally and internationally.

"We need to respond to changes in the higher education sector too, we need to show we offer value for money to our students first and foremost but also increasingly to our corporate partners as well.

"As we operate in what is a rapidly changing environment, Aston needs to be able to anticipate future changes and ensure our continued success.

"Finally, and most fundamentally, we must have a brand that reflects the personality, values and aspirations of Aston, from the logo to the key messages we tell people about the university. Most people would agree that the previous identity did not reflect Aston's dynamic, progressive, modern attitude and so it is only right that we took the opportunity to update our 'look'."

Graham Hooley, the senior pro-vice-chancellor at Aston and a professor of marketing, said the rebranding was crucial in a sector as competitive as higher education.

"I believe it represents a significant improvement on the previous one and will prove to be an invaluable asset in raising

Aston's profile," he said. "A good brand defines what that organisation is and what it wants to be. It does so visually, but more than that it lays out a set of values for us all to follow, in the way we work and interact with our contacts."

Aston University was founded in 1895 as Birmingham Municipal Technical School. It changed its name when it was given university status in 1966, but kept a strong focus on technology-related courses.

It was ranked 13th on this year's Good University Guide league table, 20 places above Birmingham University.

Its decision to rebrand itself comes at a time when universities across the region are looking at ways to improve their image to attract in lucrative students. Last month the Perry Barr-based University of Central England became Birmingham City University in a £200,000 rebranding exercised designed to link it more closely to the city's image."

FF: "They should give me a call... I can help them to design for FREE, :P"

DSvision bringing downloadable content to Nintendo's DS

Engadget: "If you're still teetering on the edge of picking up a DS Lite for yourself, here's yet another reason to go ahead and pull the trigger. Dai Nippon Printing has partnered with AM3 in order to offer up a new way to get content / media onto Nintendo's handheld. The system, dubbed DSvision, will enable DS / DS Lite owners to purchase a variety of material through the web, including books, comics, movies, music, etc., and then transfer the files over to the DS for on-the-go enjoyment. The product package will reportedly include a 512MB microSD card, a DS cartridge adapter and a USB adapter (shown after the jump) for use with one's PC. It looks as though the hardware will hit Japanese shelves in January for ¥3,980 ($37), but the web-based content delivery system won't go live until March."

Maglev wind turbines 1000x more efficient than normal windmills

Engadget: "We've seen a couple innovative wind power solutions pop up, but none that claim to offer the benefits of maglev wind turbines, which use full-permanent magnets to nearly eliminate friction by "floating" the blades above the base. According to developers, the technology is capable of scaling to massive sizes, with a proposed $53M turbine able enough to replace 1000 traditional windmills and power 750 thousand homes. Additional benefits include the ability to generate power with winds as slow as three miles per hour, operational costs some 50 percent cheaper than windmills, and an estimated lifespan of 500 years. That all sounds great, but the real proof will come when these things get put to use, which may happen sooner than you'd think: Development is proceeding rapidly in both the US and China, with Chinese power company Zhongke Hengyuan Energy Technology currently building a $5M factory to produce the turbines in capacities from 400 to 5,000 watts."

FF: "Nice, let's build this in HK :P"

Google's Android OS early look SDK now available

Engadget: "Just like the good folks promised, the early look software development kit for Google's soon-to-be huge phone OS has hit the streets... er, internet. Pedal your steam-engine over to the Open Handset Alliance site where you can download the SDK for a variety of platforms. Here's what we know the software will support right now:
  • 3G
  • Threaded text messaging
  • MPEG-4, h.264, MP3, and AAC file formats
  • 3D graphics
From what we can tell, the OS is as comfortable on larger, VGA devices as it is on more traditional smartphone layouts. Oh yeah... and it plays Quake. Below you can see an alternate fullscreen version of the phone (a hardware reference model, not a device you can expect to buy anytime soon) up and running its browser app. Check the video as follow for a real look at Android in action"

Batman Battles Evil on Streets of Hong Kong

Bloomberg: "Batman ventures out of Gotham City this weekend and swoops into Hong Kong where he will fight evil near the bar district of Lan Kwai Fong and against the city's neon-lit skyline -- though he will avoid a dunking in the harbor.

Actors Christian Bale and Morgan Freeman arrived in the southern Chinese city this week with the crew and executives of ``The Dark Knight,'' the sixth film in the latest saga of the Caped Crusader. The four-day filming in Hong Kong is one of several location shoots that may include London and Los Angeles. The movie is scheduled for summer release in the U.S.

Bale, 33, said reprising his role as Batman will entail ``climbing the tallest buildings and jumping off them'' during his Hong Kong stay. Producers decided to ax a scene where Batman drops into the harbor after test samples showed strains of salmonella and tuberculosis, the South China Morning Post, a local English- language daily, reported.

Director Christopher Nolan said the decision not to proceed with the scene was his and had nothing to do with pollution.

``It's simply a script decision,'' said Nolan, at a press conference. ``As far as any pollution questions go, I have absolutely no problem with dumping'' the stars into the harbor.

Hong Kong's Victoria Harbor is one of the world's busiest container ports. It's flanked on both sides by skyscrapers such as the I.M. Pei-designed Bank of China Building.

Areas around Queen's Road Central, Lyndhurst Terrace and the Mid-Levels' escalator, the world's longest outdoor covered escalator, may also be used as settings for some scenes, according to the Post. Ponnie Leung, a Hong Kong-based spokeswoman of distributor Warner Bros. Pictures, said she doesn't know the film's Hong Kong schedule.

Light Battle

The production team drew the ire of environmental groups for asking tenants along a waterfront to keep their lights on all night during the shoot to illuminate the city's skyline, according to the Associated Press.

``It's a very short-term inconvenience to our residents and local operators,'' said Jack So, chairman of Hong Kong's Film Development Council. ``The long-term economic benefits of having international studios shoot in Hong Kong definitely outweighs such short-term inconveniences.''

Executive Producer Kevin de la Noy appealed to the media for ``space to do our work in as efficient a manner as possible so we cause the least congestion possible.''

Hong Kong has an active tabloid press that's known to hound celebrities for photos and interviews.

Nolan, 37, who's also writing the screenplay, said he thought of working Hong Kong into the script after a brief stay in the city. In 2005, Nolan directed ``Batman Begins,'' which traces the superhero's beginnings and grossed $372 million at the box office, twice its production cost, according to BoxOfficeMojo.

Jackie Chan

Hong Kong is encouraging location filming by foreign studios to boost its movie industry. Until recently, piracy and Hollywood blockbusters had all but decimated an industry that produced stars like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan.

The movie ``will enhance Hong Kong's status internationally and promote tourism,'' said the Film Development Council's So.

The production company spent about a year working with the government to arrange the shoot, said Producer Charles Roven.

The city has featured in movies including the 2002 James Bond movie ``Die Another Day,'' where the fictional super-spy 007 enters the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club after escaping from a villain. "

Microsoft Buys 1.6% of Facebook for HK$18603359900

Apple and Sony, like peas in an iPod

Those pictures are official, un-doctored press shots from both Apple and Sony. The former (and we mean former) comes courtesy of archive.org since it's been supplanted by Apple's new nano. Google's DIGIT'AL RING

NYPOST: "A German artist has invented an accessory that publicizes how many mentions you get in a Google search - a ring that flashes the number on a digital display.

Your Google ranking is the new status symbol, more than diamonds and wealth or even being on television," said Marcus Kison, 30, who spent six months producing the glass prototype.

Kison is looking for a marketer for the titanium band, which he says should fetch upwards of $700, and wants it to hit the market next year. It comes with a jewel-case docking station that plugs into a computer. Every time you "charge" the ring, it updates your latest Google ranking.
(Paris Hilton, you're at 17.5 million hits as of this writing.)

"Being in people's minds means being important . . . Every content creator that copies and pastes your name will raise the value of your virtual mirrored importance," Kison said.

Kison says President Bush is No. 1 in Google hits, with 40.1 million.

"Just by inventing the ring, I've jumped to 10,000," Kison boasts. "

FF: "Danny Cheng, you're No. 1 in Google Hong Kong, Yeah~~"

Zune 2.0 gets official

crave: "Microsoft has officially revealed its plans for new 4GB, 8GB, and 80GB Zune MP3 players (the rumormongers nailed this one). The new players are expected out in November, priced at $149, $199, and $249, respectively. The 80GB version is only available in black, but both the 4GB and 8GB versions will be available in black, red, pink, and green. While the news hasn't exactly knocked us off our feet, there are some interesting new features: Wireless sync, Zune Social and Media Center.

On the right you can see last year's Zune. Cosmetically, the new Zune players are smaller and use a new, rubberized control pad.

FF: "Wireless sync, kool~~ Existing Zune users will also be given the new wireless sync feature once the firmware upgrade hits in November~~ Lovely~"

Sony's Walkman NW-A910 series slakes that media jones

Engadget: "Nice huh? That's the latest Walkman from Sony. However, unless you live in Japan, you can forget about using it to watch your mobile digital TV. This little pup packs a 1Seg tuner, not DMB, DVB-H, or Flo. Measuring just 86.8 × 48 × 12.3-mm, the NW-A910 series player holds up to 16GB of flash memory and a 2.4-inch, 320 x 240 pixel display. The included EPG even allows you to schedule up to 10 programs for recording up to one month in advance for up to 100 hours of MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 formatted television inside the device. As this is Japan, it still supports ATRAC in addition to non-DRMed WMA and AAC, MP3, and linear PCM audio playback with SonicStage doing the sync work back to your PC. Rounding things out are an FM tuner, direct encoding from your CD/MD player, clear audio noise canceling headphones, and a battery capable of juicing up to 6 hours of television or 36 hours of audio. The premium NW-A919/BI will sell in November for ¥47,800 while a 4GB NW-A916 should pop for about ¥30,000 ($259)."

FF: "Yup, with noise canceling headphones and FM tuner, this player will become the best music player in the world"

Sony 3-mm thin XEL-1 OLED TV in person

Engadget: "Sony was all about showing off their new turbo-thin XEL-1 OLED TV at CEATEC today, and we have to hand it to them, this thing is kind of mind-blowingly thin. Naturally that kind of thinness is a little hard to capture in photographs -- it's kind of one of those things you have to see in person. But once you do check it out, you may just find its gorgeous, bright pseudo-HD, 1m:1 contrast ratio picture hypnotizes you from remembering its ridiculously high ¥200,000 (about $1700 US) price and piddly 11-inch size. We want one on our desk, like, yesterday~"

FF: "Wow, I want one... but i don't like the base stand, can Sony re-design it? make it smaller :D"

iPhone sucks

FF: "Nokia launchs a new campaign/marketing slogan for themselves saying- Phones should be open to anythings. Yes, we all know Apple sucks~ The main point of their campaign is that you can't install third party applications on iPhone, for example- Java (which ~ 90% of other phones support and let people support the same app on different devices) or phone OS specific. btw, the quartet of posters on the left was photographed in New York city over the weekend by a MacRumors forum jockey. Cheers~

FF: "Apple sucks, Nokia rules~~ YEAH~"
