New Orleans to get free city-wide WiFi
New Orleans to get free city-wide WiFi - Engadget - www.engadget.com: "New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin has announced an unprecedented project wherein the entire city will be blanketed by free WiFi within a year. Due to the almost complete devastation of the city’s infrastructure, the free Internet access is one attempt to turn the city’s stagnant economy into one of growth and independance. Like in most large-scale networks, the New Orleans routers will be placed on top of street lights and provide citizens and businesses with 512 kbps download speeds until the city’s state of emergency has been lifted. In accordance with state laws that restrict government-owned Internet providers, speeds will drop to a paltry 128 kbps once the city has returned to some level of normalcy."

Cube World Game Cubes interactive stick figures
Cube World Game Cubes interactive stick figures - Engadget - www.engadget.com: "Even on a slow day, we probably wouldn’t bring you anymore of those played-out Tamagotchi-style pixelated games, but the Cube World Game Cubes by Radica intrigued us because of their ability to communicate with one another, a la Nintendogs. Little more than an animated stick figure inside a plastic cube, the four Game Cube characters (Slim, Dodger, Scoop, and Whip) each has his own accessory (stick, ball, rope, dog) that he plays with either spontaneously or when one of the three buttons is pushed. The cubes have built-in gyroscopes, so shaking and dropping the toy affects the little man inside, who can end up bouncing around the screen if you’re feeling sadistic. Since this whole affair would get boring after about five minutes, the real draw here is connecting mutliple cubes together and watching the characters “visit” each others’ cubes to play, hug, or fight. Despite the multiplayer fun, we still predict that your $32 buys you approximately one week of entertainment, less if you’re over the age of seven."
Smoke ban 'may be total by 2007'
BBC NEWS | Politics | Smoke ban 'may be total by 2007': "Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt says it is 'only a matter of time' before there is a complete ban on smoking in public places in England and Wales.
Speaking on the BBC's Sunday AM, she did not give a specific timescale, but said a total ban would be 'simpler'.
But she also defended the current proposed ban, which exempts pubs not serving food and some private clubs.
A total ban is due to start in Scotland next year and in Northern Ireland the year after.
'I've said several times before I think it is only a matter of time before we get to a total ban,' she said."

Monster 3-series debuts at Essen Motor Show
Autoblog - www.autoblog.com _: "German BMW-specialist Herbert Hartge unveiled this fire-breathing BMW at this week’s Essen Motor Show. It would take a lot of performance to live up to the extravagant exterior and this car delivers, with an M5 V10 engine and 7-speed SMG gearbox stuffed under the 3-series bodywork.
The Hartge H50 V10 provides its lucky owners with 550 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque to play with, good for a top speed of just under 200 mph. Aside from a strengthened rear axle, the H50 V10 has the usual chassis enhancements, augmented with double-adjustable dampers and 20 inch wheels sporting ultra-low profile tires - 245/30 fronts and 285/25 rears.

Kylie Minogue to hold homecoming tour
Google Search: "Australian pop star Kylie Minogue will hold her homecoming tour at the end of 2006 after the trip was cancelled when Kylie was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year.
On Sunday, her Australian tour promoter, The Frontier Touring Company, announced the tour would be held late in 2006.
The London-based 37-year-old singer cancelled her Showgirl: The Greatest Hits tour days before it was due to start in May after she was found to have breast cancer. She also scrapped the rest of her world tour.
Kylie underwent surgery in a Melbourne hospital to remove the cancer and has been having chemotherapy in Paris.
Kylie, who has had 37 hit singles in the UK, has sold 40 million singles and 25 million albums during her career.
Kylie will on December 25 release a digital single featuring a live version of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' and 'Santa Baby.' Early next month, the artist's Web site will also begin selling eight live audio tracks and three video clips drawn from the DVD 'Kylie: Showgirl -- The Greatest Hits Tour.'"

Sony 6GB NW-A1000 Network Walkman reviewed
Sony 6GB NW-A1000 Network Walkman reviewed - Engadget - www.engadget.com: "We just spotted a review of Sony’s new NW-A1000 6GB Network Walkman on French site generationmp3, and besides the crappy Connect software required to load tunes, they recommend the player for all your Supreme NTM and MC Solaar listening needs. As you no doubt recall, the A1000 is both ATRAC and MP3 capable, contains some innovative features like a “similar artist” button, and comes in a small, curvy, glossy case. It’s no surprise, then, that this unit gets high marks for design and ergonomics, but also for sound quality and battery life. Besides the Connect app, generationmp3 also harshs on Sony’s frustrating inclusion of a proprietary USB cable, and the rather slow transfer/load speeds, but overall, find it to be a worthy competitor to the iPods, Zens, and iRivers of the world."
Users report Xbox 360 “crashing like mad”
Users report Xbox 360 “crashing like mad” - Engadget - www.engadget.com: "So, the Xbox 360’s been available for, what, 15 minutes, and already the crash reports are streaming in. According to postings on Xbox-Scene and other fan sites, some early adopters are discovering that waiting on line in the cold for two years to snag a box was the least of their problems: the game consoles are allegedly crashing during a variety of games and reporting a range of error messages. There’s even a pic up on flickr that purports to show the 360 crashing as the Microsoft logo loads. Sure, it’s too early to declare this a pandemic and start hurling Xboxes out of windows, but it still has us wondering: How’s your 360 holding up?
P.S. And yes, our Xbox has crashed a bit too — though nothing too terrible"

Cabs of Tomorrow
Autoblog - www.autoblog.com _: "Having just returned from the Big Apple where taxis litter the narrow streets like giant yellow rats, I can appreciate the desire of some New Yorkers to update the aging design of the yellow cab. An exhibit titled “Designing the Taxi: Rethinking New York City’s Movable Public Space,” opened in the city on Nov. 3 and presents some interesting concepts for the cab, some of which could be implemented into the existing fleet of 12,000 Ford Crown Victorias in the next five years. Some of the better proposals include a fishbowl roof that allows passengers to better view the vertical city, a completely closed off driver’s compartment, and a barrier with a monitor that shows the vehicle’s speed, location and estimated arrival time, as well as accepting a passenger’s payment. While you’re reading the linked article, make sure to check out the narrated slide show of one concept, the MiniModal (shown), to see what the future of the yellow cab may look like."
Lexus IS cheat code
Autoblog - www.autoblog.com _: "What was the old Nintendo code? Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, B, A, select, start? Right?
The Lexus IS evidently has its own cheat code to turn off the traction control. While I think that vehicles like the Corvette should be equipped with four levels of user-determined traction control, I did get a big kick out of this as a member of the Nintendo generation.
Posted on VWVortex Forums, here’s the cheat code:
”start the car with the parking brake on ….then foot brake twice….(keep the foot brake down)….then parking brake twice (keep it down )and repeat till skid light is on the dash…..it will reset when you restart the car”"
Toyota’s i-unit on the street
Autoblog - www.autoblog.com _: "When we first say Toyota’s i-unit personal mobility concept, we thought it was just another crazy concept created for the Tokyo Motor Show to make us foreign journalists laugh. It turns out the i-unit’s been in development for a while and Toyota has actually entertained, or at least analyzed, the idea of producing it. Chester Dawson of BusinessWeek got to road test one at a Toyota dealership in Manhattan. From his description it’s hard to tell whether the i-unit is more Segway-like than car-like. It’s combination of drive-by-wire, information and eco technology make it a rolling showcase for Toyota know-how, but the thing tops out at 25 mph and needs to be plugged in after 30 minutes of use. If Toyota can improve the i-unit’s stamina, we may just rent one for our next golf outing."

Japan-only 20th Anniversary Edition Windows XP
Engadget - www.engadget.com: "Localization be damned, since Microsoft has decided to release a special edition of Windows XP only in Japan to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the first Windows. Finding details about what has changed versus previous XPs is difficult (probably because nothing changed), but we do know that it will feature a special “20th anniversary edition” desktop theme. Err, does that even count? What’s most interesting about this edition is everything that’s not actually Windows XP: buyers will receive replica (e.g. not working) installation CDs of Windows 95, 98, Me, and 2000, Windows box origami, memorial stamps, memorial stickers, a memorial video from the man himself, and a special early “preview” version of Windows Vista, whatever that means. Only 9,999 packages will be available, so Microsoft is also handing out freebies to a few lucky individuals. 50 people will be able to get in on the Windows Vista technical Beta, 20 will get their packages autographed by Bill Gates, 150 will be entered into a drawing for a frame for storing the discs, and 5 people get a free trip to tour Microsoft’s headquarters out in Redmond, Washington. This one will be released on December 9th for 28,140 yen (~$235 USD) and is an upgrade, so you’ll need Windows 98 or above already installed on your machine. Not that we think anyone reading this article will actually get one of these."

The OLPC $100 laptop unveiled at UN net summit >
Engadget - www.engadget.com: "We’ve finally got some pictures of the new concept design for the $100 laptop that was unveiled at the UN net summit in Tunis. As mentioned before, they had to make some changes to increase the durability of the machine, which they have finally produced a partially functioning prototype for. Encased in rubber and sporting a 500MHz processor, mesh networking capabilities, and four USB ports, the incredible hype behind the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) project only seems to be building — who are we to stand in it’s way? More pictures after the break."
Office 12 Pre-Beta Screenshot Galleries
Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: Office 12 Pre-Beta Screenshot Galleries: "The Office 12 user interface has changed all that. Making a bold move--rather than 'painting the pig' as they had with previous versions--Microsoft elected to dramatically change the Office user interface for the first time ever. It seems the menu and toolbar-based interface had become obsolete somewhere along the way. I'll have a lot more to write about this in the near future. But for now, I wanted to present some quick screenshot galleries so you can get an idea of where Microsoft is heading as it drives towards Office 12 Beta 1. Here, then, are my first Office 12 (pre-beta) screenshot galleries. (Note that many of the Office 12 applications shown here had not been switched to the new UI at the time they were created.)"

Nokia’s N91 drop tested 300+ times
Nokia’s N91 drop tested 300+ times - Engadget - www.engadget.com: "We have no way of confirming the validity of this or anything, but apparently this dude Younghee was chatting it up with a very proud Nokia mechanical test engineer, who told him that the N91 survived a three hundred cycle drop test — the same kind that killed an iPod mini after only 12 drops. Well, we suppose that solves possible-problem number one with a hard drive-enabled cellphone; now, onto battery life, price, and in the case of the N91, aesthetics."
iPod with video no likey cellphones
iPod with video no likey cellphones - Engadget - www.engadget.com: "We can neither confirm nor deny firsthand the results of the video linked below (for one reason or another no one at Engadget seems to own or have access to a cellphone), but apparently certain amounts of radio interference emitted by cellphones can drive an iPod with video freaky crazy wild. We’re not sure what makes the 5G iPod any less shielded from RFI than other iPods (or if other iPods have this problem as well), but apparently some users are confirming the issue — and if nothing else watching that iPod go on the fritz when that cellphone gets close might elicit a chuckle.

Toshiba adds gigabeat P5L, P10L flash players
Toshiba adds gigabeat P5L, P10L flash players - Engadget - www.engadget.com: "It was nice when Toshiba’s gigabeats actually held several gigs of music. But with the almighty Apple declaring that the market has shifted back to lower-capacity flash players, Toshiba has clearly chosen to follow suit, deciding that the giga moniker be more vestigal on the P5L and P10L, which have, respectively, 512MB and 1GB of storage. Both feature support for MP3 and WMA, and include FM tuners and line in, as well as 1.1-inch OLED displays and JPEG support. They’re available in black, white and, perhaps just to prove they’re not totally aping you-know-who, a Mondrian-like checkerboard of purple, pink, orange and white."

Intel PowerBooks and iMacs in January? >
Engadget - www.engadget.com: "You all know the story; we can’t verify any of this information, but AppleInsider has stressed the reliability of some inside details they have on the supposed Intel-based Apple launches we’re expecting hoping for at MacWorld in January. We think that Intel PowerBooks that soon would be really tight on the production cycle side, but AppleInsider is pretty insistent upon Intel 17 and 20-inchers en route, and also mentioned the real possibility of a 15-inch PowerBook due for February which would supposedly be 20 to 25% thinner and have built-in iSight. No, but that’s not all ladies and gentlemen; among AppleInsider’s inside Apple plans are a 13-inch widescreen iBook and Intel Mac mini due in the Spring, but this is all pretty well ahead of schedule by our estimation, so we’re taking it with a grain of salt"

Visual Studio 2005 & SQL Server 2005
Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: Visual Studio 2005 & SQL Server 2005: Introduction: "It was supposed to be different. A few years back, Microsoft laid out a roadmap which included various product 'waves,' generations of products that were linked technologically. After the company shipped Windows XP, executives from Microsoft projected that the next product waved, called Yukon, would encompass a major new upgrade to SQL Server (itself codenamed 'Yukon') and a new generation of developer products, including updates to Visual Studio and the .NET Framework (both codenamed 'Whidbey'). At the time, the Yukon wave was primarily notable for the SQL Server technology that would serve as the foundation for the WinFS storage engine. It would be followed by the Longhorn wave, which as we all know, would have included a major new Windows version (now called Windows Vista), a major Windows Server upgrade (still known as Longhorn Server), and another round of Visual Studio and .NET Framework upgrades (both codenamed Orcas)."

Sony has been updating their line of all-in-one video conferencing systems which now includes the release of the PCS-TL30 targeting “executives” or small, impromptu conference room setup. It features a 1.3 megapixel camera with 3x zoom, echo-canceling directional mic, dual-speakers, RGB connector allowing it to double as your PC’s display, Memory Stick slot, and Ethernet all integrated into the 17-inch XGA LCD monitor. As to some of the tech grit: MPEG-4 AAC audio encoding, H.264 video, that sweet sweet SIP, QoS support to keep things running, and compliance with UPnP allowing it to play-nice with other UPnP networked devices. Sure it’s meant for the office, but you execs can passively-aggressively coax your IT department into installing it at your Hampton’s retreat for a mere $2,500 green. Come on big boy, you deserve it… feel the power.
Apple shipping iPod nanos with cases
Engadget - www.engadget.com: "In what looks like an effort to put the whole nano scratching issue behind them, Apple has quietly begun shipping cases with iPod nanos. According to reports on various sites, the cases are similar to the thin fabric sleeves included with 5G iPods. The cases are not listed as standard accessories on Apple?s site, possibly because the company is still working its way through pre-case inventory. Watch for lawsuits from current nano owners who are bitter over not getting cases with their units."

Yahoo’s first cellphone coming to Cingular >
Engadget - www.engadget.com: "A big day for partnership announcements from Yahoo: They’re not going all the way and launching their own MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) service or anything like that, but Yahoo announced earlier today that they’re going to be busting out their first cellphone, a Yahoo-branded Nokia with a 1.3 megapixel digital camera, a memory card slot, and built-in MP3 playback (they didn’t reveal a specific model). The phone will be sold in partnership with SBC Communications, the parent company of Cingular (which means it’ll only work on Cingular’s network), and will offer tight integration with a subscriber’s existing Yahoo account (which would be the only point of buying a phone like this). Can a Googlephone be far behind?"

Macally mTUNE-N with iPod nano dock >
Engadget - www.engadget.com: "In a worrisome trend, manufactures have turned to offering 70’s inspired head mounted iPod accessories no doubt in response to the sorry state of stereo Bluetooth headset offerings. Macally hopes their $49 mTune-N “cordless” (er, yeah, the nano is in your ear!) headset will single-handedly resurrect that old-school cans-looks so popular along St. Mark’s or Golden-gai today. These foldable, battery free headphones are said to be “lightweight” and include a standard 3.5-mm jack for non-nano connectivity or full (blind) access to the inserted nano’s controls via integrated click wheel. Oh please let other-side be equipped to dispense our favorite cheap beer flavored soda."

New Intel-based PowerBooks and iBooks by April or May of next year? >
Engadget - www.engadget.com: "Is Apple going to bust out new Intel-based PowerBooks and iBooks even sooner than expected? Jobs confirmed a couple of months ago that they’d have the first Intel Macs out by June of 2006, but now AppleInsider is reporting that we could see ‘em in stores a few months earlier than expected. They’re careful not to get too specific, but they say that several reliable sources have told them that Apple is working on a new 15-inch PowerBook that would be about 20- to 25-percent thinner thans the current model and will sport a built-in iSight video camera (the 17-inch model will have the camera, too). They’re also reporting that Apple will finally roll out that new widescreen iBook we’ve been hearing about for months now, and that it’ll be a completely new model with a 13-inch widescreen LCD."

New Nokia N-Series Phones
Introducing Nokia’s sweet new N-Series media convergence phones, we have, from the left, the N71, N80, and the N92. And Nokia isn’t kidding around with these 3G Series 60 phones, no sir, they’re busting out the WiFi for the N80 and N92, a 3 megapixel camera in the N80, decent music support in the N71, DVB-H for the N92, and QVGA or greater resolution displays in all three phones. Both the N71 and N80 should be available Q1 2006, with the N92 following in the middle of the year. They’re priced at 400, 500, and 600 Euro (US$490, $610, and $730) respectively, and we’ve got all the juicy specs, along with more pictures, after the jump.

Starting with the music centric N71, we’re looking at a clamshell with a 2 megapixel camera, along with a second cam for video calls. Sadly there is an unimpressive 10MB of included memory, but it is expandable via miniSD. They also include "
